Yogabeats with David Sye

On Friday evening I was lucky enough to attend a workshop with David Sye from Yoga beats.  Having practised yoga for many years I had never tried yoga beats myself, however, I remember years ago being mesmerised by David Sye at the Yoga show.  David explained how he came to mix yoga and movement while teaching young kids from backgrounds of gang culture.  They couldn't keep still, so he decided maybe they had something, and began to incorporate movement, funky music and yoga with amazing results. On Friday evening he held a fundraiser in Uppermill, organised by my fabulous yoga teacher Marilyn Hegginbotham raising over £1,000 for his charity yoga beats conflict.  David takes yoga into war zones, Palestine next week, to help bring together people from both sides of the conflict with great results - check out his website www.yogabeats.com for more informationOn Friday we started with some hugging and introducing ourselves to others, it was interesting how many people feel uncomfortable looking others in the eye, we brits are so uptight at times!! After a really gentle warm up and breathwork (so often neglected in yoga classes) we began to practise yoga moves while undulating and moving to music David has mixed himself.  My body felt more pliable, more able to move and more uplifted by the music, I was hooked!  After two and a half hours we wound down and did the most amazing thing - we formed two long rows of people facing each other and each in turn walked down the line with our eyes shut.  The people forming the wall all whispered loving, kind, joyful words to the person walking down, when it was my turn I felt uplifted by the whispers in my ears of loving smile, goddess, fabulous, amazing - how lovely and heart warming it was to hear such things being whispered. This is a technique David uses when working with people from both sides of conflict - how can it fail to bring love into the hearts of the people? We did some whirling Dervish's to get a natural high and closed the event with a lovely circle, boy could you feel the love radiating at the end.  Davids philosophy is to enjoy every moment of your life without restrictions, I found the evening so mindful and joyful I would highly recommend trying Mr Sye's blend of yoga, music, movement and love - its what we all need more of!
